Provenance: once owned by the royal family of Württemberg, Friedrichshafen Castle, Lake Constance (as Jan Both); sold at auction at Rosenstein Castle near Stuttgart on 26 October 1920 on behalf of the former King William II of Württemberg through the court’s art dealer Felix Fleischhauer; Belgian private collection. Several inventory labels on the reverse, including a paper label inscribed "Jan Both" in an old hand, a label of the Fleischhauer art gallery, numbered 1971, and a type-written copy of the certificate issued by Dr. Karl Weidlich (as Jan Both). Endorsed as an authentic work by Dirck Stoop by Dr. Fred Meijer, RKD, The Hague.
